What are the big rocks in your life??One day, an expert in time management was teaching a class of business students. To drive home a point, he used an illustration that the students will never forget.
As he stood infront of this group of highly-powered over achievers, he said, "Okay, time for a quiz." And he took out a wide mouth one gallon jar, and produced a dozen fist-sized rocks. He carefully placed the rocks one by one into the jar, until it is filled. He placed the rest of the rocks aside, and asked the class, "Is the jar full?"
The class replied in unison, "Yes, of course it is full!".
To which, the expert smiled and said, "Really?"
He proceed to reach under the table, and pull out a bucket of gravel. He poured the gravel into the jar, and shook the jar. The gravel worked itself between the spaces left by the rock. He put the bucket aside, and asked the class again, "Now, is this jar full?"
The class had some ideas on what he is trying to show, and were doubtful. So some of them replied, "Probably not."
The expert smiled and said, "Good".
He reached under the table again, and pulled out a bucket of sand. He slowly poured the fine sand into the jar. The sand worked itself between the spaces between the gravel and the rocks. Now once again, the expert set the bucket aside and asked the class, "Is this jar full?"
To which, the class replied, "NO!"
The expert smiled and reached for a pitcher of water. He slowly poured the water into the jar, till it is filled to the brim. He set the pitcher aside, and asked, "Now, what is the point of this illustration?"
A student, raised his hands and replied with extreme confidence, saying, "I do. It shows that no matter how crammed or packed our schedule is, we can always fit in more."
The expert raised a brow and said ,"No, that is not the point. The truth is, if you do not put in the big rocks in first, you WILL NEVER fit them in at all."
So today, what are the big rocks in our life? It is the time spent. Time spent with your family, your loved ones, on your career, on your studies, on your dreams, on an opportunity you came across.
Now, as you reflect upon this story, think about it for yourself. What are the big rocks in YOUR life. Identify them, and put them into your jar first.
Spend some quality time this christmas with your loved ones, play less games and spend more time on achieving your dreams.
